Hosts Morocco reached the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after edging former champions South Africa 2-1 in a tense quarter-final on Saturday night.
The Atlas Lionesses took control after a strong start and secured their place in the last four, while also booking their ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Morocco take control after Ouzraoui opener
Morocco created the first clear opportunity in the 20th minute when Sanaa Mssoudy rose to meet a cross, but her header drifted narrowly over the crossbar.
South Africa responded almost immediately, with Thembi Kgatlana firing over as Banyana Banyana looked to match the hosts’ attacking preasure.
Morocco eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute. Sakina Ouzraoui reacted quickly inside the penalty area and produced a first-time finish to put the hosts ahead.
The goal was Ouzraoui’s second of the tournament and gave Morocco a narrow advantage at half-time.
The hosts extended their lead six minutes after the restart when Ibtissam Jraïdi converted from the penalty spot after Morocco were awarded a spot-kick for a foul inside the area.
Kgatlana pulls one back but Morocco hold on
South Africa refused to surrender and reduced the deficit in the 67th minute through Kgatlana.
The forward cut in from the left before unleashing a powerful strike that gave Morocco goalkeeper no chance and brought Banyana Banyana back into the contest.
The goal sparked a sustained period of pressure from South Africa, who pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Morocco, however, remained disciplined defensively and managed to contain the South African attack during the closing stages.
The hosts held on for a 2-1 victory to secure their place in the semi-finals, where they will face the winners of Sunday’s quarter-final between Nigeria and Cameroon.
Morocco await Nigeria or Cameroon
The result means Morocco could face defending champions Nigeria in the last four if the Super Falcons overcome Cameroon.
Nigeria are seeking another deep run after advancing from the group stage with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt.
For Morocco, Wednesday’s semi-final will provide another opportunity to continue their impressive campaign on home soil, while their victory over South Africa has already secured their qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
