According to statistics published on the Dutch government’s official website, residents of 30 countries are allowed to work within its borders without a work permit.

The exemption applies to both nationals of other European Economic Area nations and Swiss citizens.

According to the official statement, Dutch nationals, EEA nationals, and Swiss nationals can work freely in the Netherlands; however, citizens of all other countries must complete certain requirements before they can do so.

The exception covers 30 countries:

  1. Greece
  2. Hungary
  3. Ireland
  4. Italy
  5. Latvia
  6. Lithuania
  7. Luxembourg
  8. Malta
  9. The Netherlands
  10. Poland
  11. Portugal
  12. Romania
  13. Germany
  14. Slovakia
  15. Slovenia
  16. Spain
  17. Sweden
  18. Iceland
  19. Liechtenstein
  20. Norway
  21. Austria
  22. Belgium
  23. Bulgaria
  24. Croatia
  25. Cyprus
  26. Czech Republic
  27. Denmark
  28. Estonia
  29. Finland
  30. France

What this means for nationals outside the EEA?

Citizens of countries not on the list, including most African nations, must meet additional requirements before they can lawfully work in the Netherlands.

The Dutch government has not specified these conditions in the same section of the website, but they typically include employers obtaining the necessary work authorization on behalf of potential employees.

The Netherlands is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), which includes all 27 EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Switzerland, while neither an EU nor an EEA member, has a separate bilateral agreement with the EU that gives its citizens identical freedoms across member states.

On the other hand, Canada reveals 5 conditions foreign journalists need to meet for a work permit exemption.

These category of journalists include

  • News reporters or members of a reporter’s crew
  • Members of a film or media crew who refuse to work in Canada.
  • Journalists working for a print, broadcast, or internet news service, such as a journal, newspaper, magazine, or television show, whose employer is not a Canadian company.
  • Resident correspondents
  • Managers and administrative staff may attend events for up to six months each.
