The Swedish government has announced the five requirements for foreign nationals to be given a residence permit visa for studies in Sweden in 2026.
The Swedish Migration Agency released the rules, which apply to students pursuing higher education or other authorized programs in Sweden.
What Sweden requires from student applicants
According to the Swedish Migration Agency, the following five conditions must be met before a residence visa can be granted:
- The candidate must have a valid passport.
- The applicant must finally be accepted into full-time study in Sweden. For universities and colleges, this entails taking at least 30 credits per semester. Other programs, such as folk high schools, require a minimum of 20 teaching hours each week. Distance learning does not qualify.
- Before applying, the candidate must have paid any applicable tuition fees. A student is regarded as fully admitted only after payment is confirmed, at which point the higher education institution notifies the Migration Agency immediately.
- The candidate must have or have sought complete health insurance coverage. This criterion is specific to people whose studies will last shorter than a year. The insurance must be valid throughout the stay and cover emergency and routine medical treatment, hospitalization, emergency dental care, and medically necessary home transportation. Students admitted to at least one-year programs are urged to register in Sweden’s population register, which provides access to the country’s public health and dental care facilities.
- The applicant must be able to sustain themselves financially for the entire length of the residence permit. Applicants with family members must additionally demonstrate they can satisfy the financial demands of any dependents who do not have independent means of support.

The restrictions apply to any foreign nationals intending to study in Sweden who need a residence visa, which typically includes people from outside the European Union.
Applicants are urged to check that all requirements are in order before applying, as admission alone is not adequate without the supporting documentation and financial evidence that the Migration Agency requires.
