Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night looking to respond immediately to their first defeat of the season when they face Leeds United in the Carabao Cup third round. Xabi Alonso’s side lost 2-1 to Arsenal on Sunday, and the short turnaround means the manager must balance the need for a strong response with the demands of squad rotation.
The biggest question surrounds Moisés Caicedo. The Ecuadorian midfielder missed the Arsenal defeat after suffering a setback following his recent return against Brighton. Alonso previously admitted that Chelsea may have brought Caicedo back too quickly and has been unwilling to take another unnecessary risk with the midfielder.
That creates another headache in midfield. Roméo Lavia is still building up his match fitness, while Chelsea’s options have been stretched further following Enzo Fernández’s departure. The Arsenal match exposed the lack of control Chelsea can suffer without Caicedo, making his availability particularly important for Alonso’s system.
There is, however, positive news at the back. Levi Colwill has been confirmed fit and available for the Leeds match. His return gives Alonso an important defensive option after Chelsea conceded twice against Arsenal and struggled to maintain their defensive structure during the second half.
Chelsea will still be without four players, with Jordan Henderson among those unavailable. The experienced midfielder has yet to make his Chelsea debut as he continues his recovery from a wrist injury and awaits medical clearance. Marco Palestra is also unavailable, while Caicedo remains the major fitness concern heading into the game.
The Leeds fixture also provides an opportunity for several squad players to impress. With the game coming only three days after the Arsenal defeat, Alonso could make changes while still selecting enough experience to avoid an early Carabao Cup exit. Chelsea defeated Luton in the previous round and will be expected to progress again at Stamford Bridge.
For Alonso, the priority is bigger than simply reaching the fourth round. Chelsea need a convincing reaction after Arsenal exposed weaknesses in their midfield and defensive organisation. Leeds arrive unbeaten in their opening four competitive matches, meaning Chelsea cannot afford to underestimate them.
The spotlight will therefore remain firmly on Caicedo’s fitness, Colwill’s return and Alonso’s midfield solution. With no opportunity to strengthen the squad until January, Chelsea’s ability to manage injuries and rotate effectively could become one of the defining factors of the early months of Alonso’s reign.
