Shes in America – Lady questions woman who repaid grandmothers $100 debt with ₦17,000 years later

A Nigerian lady has questioned a woman’s decision to repay a $100 debt nearly 10 years after allegedly borrowing the money from her grandmother.

According to the lady, sometime in 2013 or 2014, the woman visited her grandmother and asked for money to pay her children’s school fees.

Since her grandmother did not have naira at the time, she gave the woman $100 to exchange for naira.

The woman reportedly never returned the money until about two years ago, when her two sons visited the grandmother and said they had come to repay the debt on their mother’s behalf. They reportedly said their mother was doing well and was currently in America for Omugwo.

In her words in parts, she said:

“Only for these people to give my grandma like ₦17,000, which was the equivalent of a hundred dollars when my grandma gave it to them. But it just did not make sense to us because you’re returning the money almost ten years later.

“You did not even return a hundred dollars because she is currently in America. She’s in a position to actually return a hundred dollars. Instead, she returned ₦17,000, which was the equivalent of a hundred dollars years back.”

She, however, questioned why the woman waited almost a decade to repay the debt and still chose to return ₦17,000, the amount that was reportedly equivalent to $100 when the money was originally borrowed.

The lady wondered if the woman’s actions were a sign of ingratitude or if she was simply overthinking the situation.

Her account has since raised questions about whether old debts should be repaid based on their original value or what the borrowed currency is worth at the time of repayment.
