The former managing editor of 60 Minutes broke his silence on his 2026 exit from the program, where he said editorial independence had become a “casualty of corporate priorities and ideological intrusion,” in a social media post reported on by The Guardian on Tuesday.
Guy Campanile, who says he was a 34-year veteran of CBS News, was subject to a round of firings in May as new leader Bari Weiss overhauled 60 Minutes. In his words, the axing came as he and several colleagues “refused to be accomplices in the destruction of the most prestigious news program on American television.”
“We would not compromise our principles or reputations by jamming unverifiable notions or White House talking points into our reporting. We objected when told to conduct interviews arranged by the administration,” he wrote in the post, according to The Guardian and follow-up news reports. “We insisted on asking the most challenging questions to business and political leaders without fear or favor. We did what reporters worth their salt do — we questioned authority.. including our own bosses. That’s how the best newsrooms work.”
He added, “To be clear — we were told to leave because we insisted on doing our jobs.”
Campanile posted the message ahead of the premiere of 60 Minutes’ latest season under the leadership of executive producer Nick Bilton, who was announced around the time Campanile was fired, on Sunday. The episode is set to feature an interview with one of the U.S. Air Force officers shot down in Iran in April.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to CBS News for comment on Campanile’s post.
In Campanile’s telling, at 60 Minutes under Weiss, “editorial independence has become a casualty of corporate priorities and ideological intrusion,” which he called “tragic.” But in his opinion it was part and parcel of a corrosive trend that has impacted many core news organizations in America.
He explained, “Information has become commoditized in the attention economy. Facts are increasingly treated as items in a buffet, chosen depending on specific appetite and ideological tastes. Journalism, especially on television, is now largely an exercise in presentation rather than examination.”
In his view, influencers and opinion writers who claim the title “journalist” and are given the reins of various news brands — and he pointed to Weiss being a person in this category — have aggravated the situation. “Many of these newsroom managers have never been exposed to the depths of poverty, the ravages of war or the heartbreak of disaster,” Campanile wrote. “Yet these dilettantes and their enablers make critical programming decisions based on what might trend on-line over the next few hours.”
Along with Campanile, CBS News fired former executive editor Tanya Simon as well as correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega in May. Not long after, correspondent Scott Pelley, who clashed with Bilton over the layoffs and accused him of trying to kill 60 Minutes in a staff meeting, was also fired.
Overall, Campanile praised his decades-long tenure at CBS News, calling it an amazing adventure. “I am excited about the opportunities ahead. In the meantime, I cannot remain silent as trust built over decades by my colleagues and mentors is wrecked. The audience deserves so much better,“ he added.
Campanile continued, “Thomas Jefferson wrote, ‘Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.’ It’s dangerous to ignore his warning. As for my friends that remain at my former employer: Hold the line. Don’t give an inch because they will keep scraping away until there’s nothing left worth a damn.”
