Ella Langley‘s “Choosin’ Texas” made chart history on Tuesday, as the country smash officially holds the record for most weeks at Number One on Billboard’s Hot 100, securing its 23rd week atop the chart.
Langley takes the title from Mariah Carey‘s perennial holiday anthem “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” affirming “Choosin’ Texas’s” status not only as the song of the summer but as one of the biggest hits of the decade, already 6-times platinum according to the RIAA.
“Choosin’ Texas” first topped the Hot 100 during the week of February 14. It spent the next several months going in and out of Number One as tracks from Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, BTS, Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, Drake and Ariana Grande would manage to briefly dethrone the song. By July though, the Hot 100 became Langley’s alone, as “Choosin’ Texas” would spent 13 consecutive weeks at Number One on its path to the all-time record.
“Choosin’ Texas’” dominance is just the latest affirmation of country music‘s boom in the streaming era. Lil Nas X’s country/hip-hop crossover “Old Town Road” had set the Hot 100 record as well back in 2019, with Shaboozey tying that record in 2024 with “A Bar Song (Tipsy). (Carey managed to beat both songs last holiday season when “All I Want For Christmas Is You” returned to the chart.)
The record’s a major victory both for Langley and for her record label, Columbia Records, which as the label behind “Choosin’ Texas,” “All I Want For Christmas is You” and “Old Town Road“ holds the bragging rights for three of the four longest-charting songs of all time.
With Langley now holding the record, the question will be how long she’ll keep it. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” shooting back to the top has become an all but inevitable occurrence each holiday season, and as long as that’s the case, it’ll likely be difficult for any song to beat it forever. Every winter belongs to Carey, but this summer at least, was Langley’s alone.
