Could Portugal face FIFA ban over political interference in Ronaldo saga?

Portugal are not automatically facing international exclusion despite reports of political involvement in the dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and national-team coach Jorge Jesus.

The Ronaldo saga has taken a new turn after Portuguese politicians were reportedly involved in efforts to bring the two men together following the forward’s departure from the national-team camp.

That development has raised questions about FIFA’s rules on political interference and whether Portugal could face sanctions if government involvement extends beyond mediation.

What FIFA rules say about political interference

FIFA requires its member associations to manage their affairs independently and without interference from governments or other third parties.

A breach of that principle can lead to disciplinary action, including suspension in serious cases.

There have been previous examples of national associations being suspended after governments became directly involved in the running of football.

In 2008, FIFA suspended the Albanian Football Association over what it described as “serious political interference”. The suspension, which was also adopted by UEFA, prevented Albania from participating in official and friendly matches and other UEFA activities.

More recently, FIFA suspended Chad in 2021 after the government withdrew powers from the country’s football association, installed a temporary governing body and took control of its offices.

Congo faced a similar suspension in 2025 after government interference in the administration of its football association.

In both cases, the suspensions were lifted after the football authorities regained control of their organisations and the political interference ended.

Portugal situation is different for now

The key issue for Portugal is whether politicians are merely attempting to mediate between Ronaldo and Jesus or whether the government is actually interfering with the Portuguese Football Federation’s administration.

An attempt by politicians to encourage reconciliation between the player and coach would be significantly different from a government imposing decisions on the federation or taking control of its operations.

The previous FIFA suspensions involved direct government intervention in the management or structure of football associations.

There is currently no indication that Portugal’s football federation has lost its independence or that the government has taken control of its affairs.

That means there is no established basis at present to suggest Portugal are about to be excluded from the European Championship, World Cup or other international competitions.

The situation could become more serious if political involvement develops into direct control over the federation or its football decisions.

For now, the Ronaldo-Jesus dispute remains primarily a national-team controversy rather than a FIFA suspension case.
