A traditional woman has sparked debate after criticising feminism, accusing the movement of encouraging women to reject childbirth, household responsibilities and traditional expectations in relationships.
In a statement circulating online, the woman expressed displeasure with what she described as changing attitudes among women, arguing that feminism had influenced a generation to challenge established cultural and marital roles.
She also questioned the idea of equal rights, suggesting that women who embrace feminism were abandoning values she considered important to Nigerian culture.
Woman questions changing roles of women in relationships
The woman said feminism had negatively influenced the younger generation, particularly in how women relate to men and approach family responsibilities.
She argued that some women were increasingly unwilling to cook, wash or have children, presenting these choices as evidence of a departure from traditional expectations.
She further complained that women were becoming more assertive when addressing men, particularly when they felt disrespected.
The woman said, “Women are now standing up to men and telling them “how dare you talk to me like that?””
She also described feminism as an imported ideology that conflicted with traditional cultural values, urging women who identify with the movement to reconsider their positions.
Feminism debate over culture and equal rights
Her comments have brought attention to the continuing debate surrounding feminism, gender equality and traditional expectations of women in Nigerian society.
While some people associate traditional family roles with cultural values and marital stability, others argue that women should have the freedom to make personal decisions about marriage, childbirth and household responsibilities.
The discussion also raises questions about whether cultural traditions should determine the roles women occupy in relationships or whether couples should decide how to share domestic responsibilities.
The woman’s remarks reflect the ongoing disagreement between supporters of traditional gender roles and advocates of greater equality in relationships.
However, the available account does not establish how widely her views have been received or whether the comments have generated a particular public response.
