International students are playing an increasingly important role in the UK’s migration system, with many deciding to stay after finishing their studies.

The Migration Observatory’s recent examination of Home Office data reveals how new visa requirements are changing the transition from study to work.

The UK immigration requirements change how Nigerian students stay and work after graduation.

Here are seven key UK Visa Rules to watch

An increase in skilled worker visa applications.

The Graduate Visa isn’t the only choice. More students are pursuing the Skilled Worker option, which can lead to permanent residency. In 2021, 23% of non-EU students who had study visas transferred to Skilled Worker visas by their fourth year, up from 3% in 2010.

More international students stay after graduation.

Recent cohorts are more likely to stay in Britain after completing their education. Following Brexit, the proportion of people moving to work visas increased dramatically, reaching 18% (about 97,000 people) among the 2022 cohort within the first year. Many prolong their stay through the Graduate route, but it is too early to say how many will stay permanently.

Graduate visas remain an important route.

The Graduate route remains a popular option, allowing international students to live and work in Britain for a limited time without regard to job type or salary. In 2025, 225,000 Graduate visas were issued to students and their dependents.

Overqualification of past students

Many international students joining the care profession may be overqualified. Care positions often require GCSE-level qualifications, although most international students pursue master’s degrees.

According to the Migration Observatory, this mismatch means that some graduates are not fully utilizing their abilities, even though their UK experience may minimize the danger of exploitation when compared to workers hired directly from outside.

Care employment attracts over half of the study-to-work switchers.

Between January 2021 and March 2026, over 44% (52,100 persons) of those transitioning from study to Skilled Worker visas took on care or senior care roles.

This is more than the 29% of Skilled Worker visas granted to care workers overall. The pace has slowed after 2023 due to stricter recruitment regulations.

Immigration rules are growing increasingly restrictive.

In recent years, regulations have become more stringent. In 2024, most students were prohibited from bringing family members.

The Skilled Worker pay level will increase to £41,700 in July 2025, and international recruitment for care positions will be closed.

The Labor government has also announced that starting in January 2027, the Graduate path will be reduced from two years to 18 months.

Future students may face further challenges in obtaining long-term residency.

Higher wage thresholds, harsher Skilled Worker restrictions, and shorter post-study visas may limit permanent settlement.

The administration has suggested increasing the qualifying time for indefinite leave to remain from five to fifteen years for jobs below the graduate level.

This could have a particular impact on people who work in the care sector. As the Migration Observatory stated, “Recent cohorts have not yet reached the point where they must decide whether to obtain a long-term visa or leave Britain.”

For Nigerian and other international students, the new UK visa rules requirements mean that careful planning is required to secure a future in the UK.
