An increase in skilled worker visa applications.
The Graduate Visa isn’t the only choice. More students are pursuing the Skilled Worker option, which can lead to permanent residency. In 2021, 23% of non-EU students who had study visas transferred to Skilled Worker visas by their fourth year, up from 3% in 2010.
More international students stay after graduation.
Recent cohorts are more likely to stay in Britain after completing their education. Following Brexit, the proportion of people moving to work visas increased dramatically, reaching 18% (about 97,000 people) among the 2022 cohort within the first year. Many prolong their stay through the Graduate route, but it is too early to say how many will stay permanently.

Overqualification of past students

According to the Migration Observatory, this mismatch means that some graduates are not fully utilizing their abilities, even though their UK experience may minimize the danger of exploitation when compared to workers hired directly from outside.
Care employment attracts over half of the study-to-work switchers.
Between January 2021 and March 2026, over 44% (52,100 persons) of those transitioning from study to Skilled Worker visas took on care or senior care roles.
This is more than the 29% of Skilled Worker visas granted to care workers overall. The pace has slowed after 2023 due to stricter recruitment regulations.

Future students may face further challenges in obtaining long-term residency.
Higher wage thresholds, harsher Skilled Worker restrictions, and shorter post-study visas may limit permanent settlement.
The administration has suggested increasing the qualifying time for indefinite leave to remain from five to fifteen years for jobs below the graduate level.
This could have a particular impact on people who work in the care sector. As the Migration Observatory stated, “Recent cohorts have not yet reached the point where they must decide whether to obtain a long-term visa or leave Britain.”
