IPOB sets 14-day deadline for Nnamdi Kanus appeal, threatens major election boycott

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to ensure that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal against his conviction is listed and heard.

IPOB made the demand in a statement released on Tuesday, September 1, by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, amid concerns over what the group described as delays in the legal process.

The group questioned the continued detention of Kanu and the legal basis for his conviction, while urging the Federal Government to address the outstanding legal issues surrounding his case.

IPOB threatens election boycott

According to the group, failure to have Kanu’s appeal listed and heard within 14 days would trigger a total boycott of forthcoming elections across Biafraland and beyond.

IPOB also referenced a separate legal challenge before the Supreme Court concerning the continuation of Kanu’s trial after some charges against him had previously been quashed.

IPOB argued that the Federal Government should either defend the conviction and the jurisdiction of the resumed trial in court or release Kanu.

The group further maintained that its proposed election boycott should not be viewed simply as an action that could benefit President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Group explains proposed boycott

IPOB said it did not call for an election boycott in 2023, claiming that its supporters participated but later disputed the results and pursued unsuccessful legal challenges.

The organisation described a collective refusal to participate in elections as a political statement by people who had lost confidence in the electoral system.

IPOB therefore urged those opposed to the proposed boycott to focus on ensuring that Kanu’s appeal is heard, while reiterating its demand for his immediate and unconditional release.
