Refereeing body admits VAR error over Haalands controversial derby winner against Man United

Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted an “error of judgement” was made in awarding Erling Haaland’s controversial winner during Manchester City’s derby victory over Manchester United.

Haaland struck in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, turning in Josko Gvardiol’s deflected cross at the back post after City had been reduced to 10 men.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR intervened and determined that Haaland had been kept onside by Patrick Dorgu’s boot.

However, the review did not overturn the decision because of the position of Enzo Fernandez, who was also offside and attempted to reach the cross.

Pro Ref admits VAR mistake

Pro Ref acknowledged that Fernandez’s involvement should have prompted a review by referee Michael Oliver.

“It was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective,” the refereeing body said.

“However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.”

Pro Ref added that it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge what it considered an “error of judgement” and confirmed that the incident would be reviewed.

The controversy centred on whether Fernandez’s attempt to head the ball affected United defender Lisandro Martinez, who was positioned directly behind him.

Although Fernandez did not make contact, he was clearly attempting to play a ball that passed close to him. Under the offside law, such an action can constitute an offence if it impacts an opponent.

United furious after costly decision

Martinez described the decision as an “injustice”, while United manager Michael Carrick said he was “confused” by the explanation.

Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville were also critical of the decision, with Neville predicting that the refereeing body would eventually acknowledge the mistake.

The controversy came in a match already overshadowed by another contentious decision, with City midfielder Phil Foden sent off in the first half for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes.

Despite playing with 10 men for more than 70 minutes, City held on for victory, preserving their perfect league start under Enzo Maresca and moving level on points with Arsenal.

United, meanwhile, dropped points for the third time in four league matches and remain 13th.
