Resident Evil has hit the ground running in its box office opening as the reboot reaches unprecedented heights for the franchise. Director-co-writer Zach Cregger‘s horror-survival video game adaptation grossed $26.3 million on Friday, including $8.8 million in Thursday previews. Sony Pictures now expects a launch in the $53 million to $55 million range for its three-day opening weekend, but it could get closer to an eye-popping $60 million. Earning a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, the movie is debuting far above the $40 million that the studio had initially projected. Resident Evil opened in 3,684 North American theaters and carries a…

MGM+‘s American Hostage is a TV show based on a podcast about the power of radio, a chaotic media-hopping smorgasbord that feels oddly appropriate when you watch the eight-part series that flirts with a number of contemporary topics but ends up being mostly well-acted, over-extended nostalgia for landline telephones and manageable institutional corruption. Created by the talented Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers (The Night Agent) and boasting an ensemble led by a likably understated Jon Hamm and a convincingly overstated Giovanni Ribisi, American Hostage starts off promisingly, peaks in the middle and overstays its welcome — in part because after…

President Donald Trump has followed through on his Friday threat to ban disfavored outlets from the White House. MS NOW says that its journalists were denied entry to the White House Saturday morning, and had their press badges taken away from them. Correspondent Akayla Gardner told the channel that when she was entering the facility through the security office, her badge did not work, and the channel’s photographer’s badge did not work (though her producer’s badge did work, sparking some confusion). “When I was inside where we have magnetometers, I attempted to scan my badge, which we have to do…

Southern California seems to have been terraformed by the Creator to attract the motion picture industry: the mild, sunny weather conducive to outdoor shooting; the boundless variety of natural scenery (ocean, mountains, desert, farmlands) that can double for any location on earth; the diverse population of ready-made extras, and, at least in the first decades, the open shop policies of the city fathers (no pesky trade unions). Little wonder that the pioneers of the medium ditched the cold, clammy, and crowded precincts of New York and New Jersey to light out for the picture-perfect vista. Soon enough, modern factories staffed…

Hudson Williams is teasing what it’s been like on set for Heated Rivalry season two. The 26-year-old actor, speaking during a conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival, spoke about what it was like for him and co-star Connor Storrie when they went back to set on the hit queer hockey romance drama. “It was surreal to step into it,” Williams told the crowd. “We’re going to be kissing each other, brother. I’m going to be doing my fucking Russian accent to you,” he said, mimicking Storrie. Williams said it was hard for them to wrap their heads around going…

Along with Sundance in January, Berlin in February and Cannes in May, the fall festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and Toronto almost invariably yields many of the films destined to keep percolating in the conversation from critics’ group awards in December all the way to the Oscars mid-March. This year’s crop was way lighter than usual on major contenders, but The Hollywood Reporter’s hard-working reviews team nonetheless found plenty to love. Five of our top 13 picks are documentaries, with subjects as varied as the resistance of independent journalism in Putin’s Russia; an iconoclast of British queer cinema; a devastating…

“I love anytime women are funny,” actress Rachel Marsh declares. Thankfully, the 34-year-old has been able to be in plenty of projects that showcase this, most recently Prime Video’s romantic comedy The Love Hypothesis. Marsh plays Anh, a graduate student and best friend to Lili Reinhart‘s Olive in the streamer’s adaptation of the wildly popular Ali Hazelwood novel. The actress was not looking to become the quirky best friend character, a trope that director Claire Scanlon and writers Sarah Rothschild and Hazelwood were not interested in rehashing. “She is important in this story,” Marsh tells The Hollywood Reporter on a…

Paramount and a dozen states led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta are closing in on a deal to settle a lawsuit challenging the studio’s bid to acquire Warner Bros. In new civil court filings, lawyers for incarcerated Nick Reiner continue to fight for access to his trust money to pay for his criminal defense as he stands accused of killing his parents, Rob and Michele. Reiner, 32, wants to rehire Alan Jackson, who has represented the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Karen Read. The star attorney previously withdrew from the Los Angeles case for lack of funding. (Prosecutors recently stated they wouldn’t seek the death penalty after consulting Reiner’s siblings.) The trust’s fiduciaries cited a California law known as the “Slayer Statute” as their rationale for not dispersing the…
