He thought he had scammed me – POS girl cries out after man allegedly changed ₦1k to ₦100k

A Nigerian POS girl identified as Amicable Esther has shared her experience with a man who allegedly attempted to trick her into sending ₦100,000 instead of the ₦1,000 he requested.

In a Facebook post, the POS operator warned her colleagues to be extra vigilant when allowing customers to enter their account details directly into a POS machine.

‘He Said He Wanted to Enter His Account Details Himself’

According to Esther, the man visited her shop and requested to make a ₦1,000 deposit into his account.

“To all the POS operators out there, please let’s be careful o. Can you imagine, a man came to my shop and said he wants to deposit ₦1,000, but he would like to enter his account details himself,” she wrote.

Esther said she agreed and handed the POS machineto him after he requested that the transfer be processed through Moniepoint rather than OPay.

“So he said I shouldn’t use OPay machine, that he wants me to send it through Moniepoint, and I said no problem,” she explained.

‘He Added More Zeros’

She said she entered ₦1,000 into the machine before handing it to the customer to input his account number.

However, when he returned the POS machine, Esther claimed that she noticed the man had allegedly added more zeros to the amount, changing the transfer from ₦1,000 to ₦100,000.

“So when he was done putting it, I collected my POS machine back only for me to see that this man went back and added more zeros, making it ₦100,000,” she stated.

Esther said she did not confront the man but instead cancelled the transaction and restarted the process with the original ₦1,000 amount.

“I didn’t even say anything. I just cancelled it and pressed ₦1,000 back and told him I have sent it,” she wrote.

Man Allegedly Leaves Immediately

According to the POS operator, the man allegedly left her shop immediately after she completed the ₦1,000 transaction.

“This man stood up immediately and left with a bike, so in his mind now, he has scammed me. Funny,” she wrote.

Esther urged other POS operators to be cautious while carrying out transactions and avoid losing sight of the amount entered on their machines.

“Please let’s be extra vigilant,” she added.

Her post has since sparked reactions online, with social media users sharing their thoughts about the alleged attempted scam.
