New Zealand Announces 2 Parent Visa Routes, Identifies 1 Offering Permanent Residence Slots

New Zealand’s immigration office has unveiled two visa options that enable parents of citizens and residents to join their families in the nation.

New Zealand has introduced two formal visa options for the parents of its citizens and permanent residents, allowing families to live together in the country either permanently or on an extended visit basis.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) described both alternatives, the Parent Resident Visa and the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, which were meant to meet diverse family circumstances and immigration aims.

The Parent Resident Visa application process is two-step. Applicants start by submitting an expression of interest (EOI).

If the EOI is selected and meets all criteria, INZ issues an Invitation to Apply (ITA), giving the applicant four months to submit a full residence application.

INZ is authorized to approve up to 2,500 of these visas per year.

How the Parent Boost Visitor Visa Works

For families who prefer a longer-term visiting arrangement, the Parent Boost Visitor Visa allows for stays of up to five years, with the option of applying for a second five-year visa, bringing the total possible stay to a decade.

Visa holders have the freedom to leave and return to New Zealand at any time during their visa validity. Unlike the resident visa, this option does not result in permanent residence.

It is only for visiting purposes. Applicants must apply from outside New Zealand and be sponsored by an adult child with New Zealand citizenship or residency.

They must also meet health and character requirements, demonstrate financial self-sufficiency or qualify through their sponsor’s income, and carry mandatory health insurance that covers medical care, cancer treatment, repatriation, and the return of remains for the duration of their stay.

After three years, a compliance check is performed, and applicants must provide proof of valid insurance as well as a current medical certificate.

Failure to meet these requirements can result in visa cancelation. The two pathways reflect New Zealand’s efforts to strike a balance between family reunification and the long-term viability of its public services.

New Zealand: New Age Rules for Partner Visas

Similarly, we reported that New Zealand has announced changes to the age and evidence requirements for partner visa categories beginning September 25, 2026.

The updated rules require that both the visa applicant and the partner supporting the application be 18 or older at the time of submission.
