Corinthians have appointed former Netherlands international Clarence Seedorf as their head coach, marking his return to football management after more than seven years away from the touchline.
The 50-year-old has signed a contract running until the end of 2027, taking charge of a side struggling near the bottom of Brazil’s top division with eight matches remaining.
Seedorf replaces Fernando Diniz, who was dismissed last week after Corinthians suffered seven consecutive league defeats. The club sit 16th in the standings, just one position above the relegation zone, leaving the new manager with an immediate challenge.
The appointment offers Seedorf an opportunity to rebuild his managerial career while helping Corinthians avoid dropping out of the Brazilian top flight.
Seedorf targets fighting spirit at Corinthians
Speaking after his appointment, Seedorf acknowledged the responsibility that comes with taking charge of the Brazilian club during a difficult period.
“Taking on this challenge is an honour, but also a huge responsibility. I am here to give my all and build a team that fights for every ball, every minute, every victory,” he said.
The Dutchman inherits a squad that includes former Manchester United players Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard, giving him experienced options as he attempts to improve the team’s results.
Corinthians’ recent losing run leaves little room for error, with the remaining fixtures likely to prove decisive in determining their league status.
Seedorf will need to restore confidence, improve consistency and collect points quickly if the club are to move clear of the relegation zone.
Champions League winner resumes managerial career
Seedorf last managed Cameroon’s national team in 2019, ending a spell that followed earlier coaching appointments at AC Milan, Shenzhen FC and Deportivo La Coruna.
His previous managerial experiences produced mixed results, but his reputation as a player remains strongly established in European football.
The former midfielder retired in 2014 after a distinguished playing career that included four Champions League titles. He won the competition twice with AC Milan and once each with Real Madrid and Ajax.
Seedorf remains the only player to have won the Champions League with three different clubs, a record that speaks to his success at the highest level of European football.
